Reflections on Writing Ten Books in Nine Months

At the end of last year, I decided to challenge myself to write a ten book series.

Before then, the longest series I’d ever written had been four books.

Most romance authors have several series going at once, and go back and forth between books, but I like to write the first drafts of a series all in a row, which meant writing ten books in a row.

That’s a lot of books.

I wasn’t sure if I would be able to do it.

But yesterday, I wrote THE END on book number ten.

I started book one mid-January.

Finished book ten at the beginning of September.

That’s ten books in nine months.

Part of me can’t quite believe it.

So what did I learn?

Let’s get the obvious out of the way: I learned that I can write ten books in nine months, which is a big deal! A lot of people can’t even write one book a year, let alone ten. I’m very proud of myself.

I also learned that at the end of writing ten books in a year, my brain is mush. Not surprising and something I was expecting. After all, I wrote about twenty different main characters, plus tons of side characters. That’s a lot of characters to write about.

Would I do this again?

Yes, I would. Maybe next time I’ll even try for twelve books.

Will I be attempting it anytime soon?

No, I will not, because my brain needs to rest.

But watch this space, because the year after next, I just might post a blog reflecting on the process of writing twelve books in a row.
